Description: This vintage original 1944 15-chapter Republic serial was based on the Captain America comic book character of the same name and is the first film to feature the character. The series had Captain America, played by Dick Purcell, doing battle with archvillain, The Scarab, who steals a secret device that destroys buildings with sound vibrations. This original, vintage and authentic One Sheet (27" X 41") poster is in very fine- condition and is linen-backed with vibrant color that displays absolutely beautifully. Please note that this poster was for the final concluding episode of the serial. The iconic image is an excellent representation of the superior poster artwork that was used to feature the earliest designs of comic book superheroes in serial movies starting in the early 1940’s. This classic Republic Serial had restoration to address the fold and border wear, minute cross-fold separation, and a few interior scuffs and creases. Some touchup in the folds visible. The poster looks absolutely fantastic and the inspiring artwork has a very cool 1940’s design. Of historic significance, this impressive pioneering creative design set the template for future artistic representations of Captain America and other comic book superheroes. Republic Pictures released a 15 part serial in 1944. Based on the comic books published by Timely Comics — the corporate predecessor to Marvel Comics — it was the first film to feature a Marvel Comics character which should be of intense interest to Marvel fans. The serial deviates significantly from the comic book source material: the civilian identity of Captain America is District Attorney Grant Gardner rather than U.S. Army private Steve Rogers, the character's superhuman enhancement origin story and Nazi villains are omitted, and the character uses a gun rather than his iconic shield. Captain America was produced at a negative cost of US$222,906 (equivalent to $3,705,549 in 2022), making it the most expensive serial ever produced by Republic; it was additionally the final superhero serial the company ever produced. It was re-released in 1953 under the title Return of Captain America.
