Description: Rare original antique print from an 1870s illustrated journal. It depicts Pope Pius IX of the Roman Catholic Church dropping documents that include the First Vatican Council, Infallibility Dogma, Sovereignty of the pope, Catholic Sovereignty (Oecumenical Council), Priest Rule at an End, Napoleon Prisoner, and Church & State (ripped in two). Below the picture is a poem/stanza from William Shakespeare and John Fletcher's play, King Henry VIII, Act II, Scene 2.Pius IX (Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti 1792 – 1878) was head of the Catholic Church from 1846 to 1878, the longest verified papal reign. He was notable for convoking the Vatican Council in 1868 and for being pontiff when the Kingdom of Italy occupied the Estates of the Church in 1870, effectively ending the temporal power of the Holy See. He took the name Pius, after his generous patron and the long-suffering prisoner of Napoleon, Pius VII. Pius refused to leave Vatican City, declaring himself a "prisoner of the Vatican". His ecclesiastical policies towards other countries, such as Russia, Germany or France, were not always successful, owing in part to changing secular institutions and internal developments within these countries. However, concordats were concluded with numerous states such as Austria-Hungary, Portugal, Spain, Canada, Tuscany, Ecuador, Venezuela, Honduras, El Salvador, and Haiti. The print is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 11 x 15 inches (28 x 38 cm). The picture fills most of it, measuring about 9 x 13 inches, with a caption below it. THere is a partial article above and below it.The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print. See scan for an accurate view of the condition. This print will come with a Certificate of Authenticity. Powered by SixBit's eCommerce Solution
