Description: A 4 5/8 inch tall rectangular-shaped beautiful DEEP PURPLE colored antique EXPECTORANT or Cough Cure type patent medicine bottle. It is a cathedral shaped figural bottle, almost in the shape of a house as it has a stepped-up ridged-roof, making it a very attractive antique bottle. This is an ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand Blown Into Mold bottle (BIM) with a tooled top, dating back to the late 1800's. Bottle embossed: "DR. F.M. CHENEY'S / EXPECTORANT / COVINGTON, GA." Condition: This bottle is in good overall condition and is a crudely hand-blown bottle as well. For example, the lip is poorly formed, tooled, about the crudest tooled lip we've seen. Though it looks like the lip is chipped, when you look closely you'll see it is not chipped or dinged at all, but whoever hand finished the lip must of been learning the trade as it is anything but perfect. Then too the whole finish of the glass is rough, like it had sand in the mold, even the embossing is very jumbled. The point is that even though the bottle is in nice condition, it looks like it is worn out it was so crudely manufactured. Other than the sloppy construction of the bottle there is nothing specifically wrong with it; NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc. Age: An ORIGINAL ANTIQUE hand-blown bottle (Blown-In-Mold = BIM) with a tooled-top, ca. late 1800's. Very ornate with the stepped-up or ridged-roof design, especially when displayed in a well-lit shelf. You hear about old glass turning purple in the sunlight ... the purple amethyst color is the result of this bottle blown with manganese-glass and then subjected to strong exposure to UV rays. Manganese is a mineral, a rock, that was mined, crushed, and pulverized into a powder, then added to vats of molten liquid glass, and acted as a decolorizing agent to turn the natural aqua-tinted glass into a pure crystal clear colorless glass. But when exposed to the ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, it triggers a chemical reaction and the manganese oxidizes and turns a wonderful amethyst color. This bottle was passed through a source of intense UV heat or light which accelerated the process that would of taken forever to do in the natural sunlight. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 has manganese in it and will turn amethyst.
