Description: With a population of 67 and only 52 graded higher, this variety of 1940 reverse of 1938 Jefferson nickel proof is undervalued and incredibly difficult to find. As of 12-10-24 the only other example of this variety I could locate on the entire internet is one PR68 on ebay that is significantly more expensive. This beautifully toned example has been conservatively graded PR66 by PCGS. Under the toning, the surfaces are extremely clean with no hairlines or distractions. I really thought this one would have graded higher. CAC has approved the grade with a green bean. According to Ron Guth and Bill Gale in their 2002 edition ofUnited States Proof Sets and Mint Sets, the Reverse of 1938 (with wavy steps on Monticello) is currently "approximately fifty times rarer" than the Reverse of 1940 variety.
