Description: Rare find! Magnificent vintage Medieval theme hand-carved wooden chess set in mint condition—purchased behind the Iron Curtain on a Warsaw backstreet in the early 1970s, most likely made in Poland or a neighboring Eastern European country. This was the only set left, and I found it at a time when dollars and the DM were like gold to small merchants struggling with the Communist economy. Given its vintage and origin and the massive changes in that part of Europe, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever find an unused mint set like this again. As with most premium hand-carved wooden chess sets, each piece has unique facial features and character. Examine the photos carefully to appreciate the mint condition, the individual character, the chisel marks of each piece which makes this rare set so special. Made from soft linden wood, both light and dark sides are finished with matted varnish, one side in natural color and the other partly stained brown, and the pieces are bottomed in green felt. The original storage case is in perfect shape, made with composite wood bound with snake skin texture paper on the outside. On the inside two custom trays are lined with silk-like fabric with individual positions for each piece. Without a doubt, this rare find will make a fine addition to any collection of exclusive chess sets! Free shipping in the USA.
