Description: REAL GOLD THREAD - RICH GOLD SHADE. JAPANESE FLAT TYPE THREAD 25 METRES. The thread is wound onto an acid free foamboard bobbin. 25 metres of real gold flat type thread from Japan suitable for embroidery, weaving or stitching. The one pound coin shows the scale. One metre covers approximately 4 square centimetres densely. 25 metres covers about 100 square cm or 16 square inches. The thread width is about 0.4mm. Thread bought on a foam board bobbin will be inside an acid free clear bag. This thread is mainly made by coating silk thread with urushi lacquer, flattening it into a fine ribbon and then gilding it with twenty-four carat gold leaf. This thread was part of the stock of a business which wove cloth of gold and made and wove and embroidered elaborate gold patterned obi material (the ornate broad waist bands worn around a kimono by women). It was imported from Japan in 2009 after the closure of the workshop. There was a programme on BBC Radio 4 about the traditional kimono and accessory industry in Japan detailing the huge amounts of time spent hand weaving and dyeing the threads used for these fabrics. (Mastering the Art of the Kimono transmitted on 23rd November 2011.) I have used some of this thread myself from the larger amount I bought and wound off onto these bobbins to give other craft workers a chance to experiment with it at modest cost. Meaning: gold thread) Interesting effects can be obtained by couching this thread with coloured silks and also using it in brocade weaving techniques as a part of a textile design.
