Clark (1874-1957), a native of New York, studied art at the William Kellogg School and at the Art Students League as a prelude to his long career as one of the preeminent American sporting artists and illustrators, producing oil paintings, watercolors, etchings, drypoints, and aquatints, with an emphasis on waterfowl and waterfowl hunting, and illustrating numerous publications, both periodicals and books. He wrote and illustrated waterfowl hunting stories for three books "Stray Shots," "Gunner's Dawn," and "Pot Luck," the first two published by The Derrydale Press, which also published "Roland Clark's Etchings" and a number of prints. His painting of pintails won the 1938 competition for the annual Federal Duck Stamp Design. Crease in the center of the background, else very good. (#6843).
