Description: Purchased in the 1970's. Size: 5" x 3" San Juan de Oñate established the first Spanish capital city in New Mexico near Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo (formerly San Juan Pueblo) in 1598.Traditionally, San Juan (O'ke in Tewa) was the center of an Indian meeting ground, its people so powerful that only an O'ke native could declare war for the Pueblo Indians. Although called a Taoseño, Pueblo Revolt leader Popé actually was a San Juan native. Rosita de Herrera (b. 1940) is a daughter of noted Ohkay Owingeh potter Tomasita Montoya and a sister of noted potter Dominguita Naranjo. Rosita often combines the two distinctive styles of incised and carved designs in her pottery. The two different styles were part of the innovation of her mother and 7 other potters beginning in the 1930s.
