Shelved []. NOTES Madonna Louise Ciccone, known primarily as the mononym 'Madonna', was born August 16, 1958 in Bay City, Michigan. Best known as the "Queen of Pop" Madonna is a versatile artist who has always reinvented herself, her music and artistic styles across a long career spanning from humble beginnings as a dancer and musician in New York in 1978, to her solo stardom in 1983 with her self-titled debut album "Madonna", and well into today. Madonna would begin her writing career writing the coffee table book "Sex" in 1992 which featured adult content including softcore pornography and simulations of sexual acts. The financial success of "Sex" led the publishing company Callaway Arts & Entertainment, who had published the book, to greater renown, and thus its owner, Nicholas Callaway, to look for ways to diversify and expand the business. Thus it was that after witnessing Madonna reading a book to a group of teenagers for the release of her music video "Bedtime Story", Callaway would bring the idea of writing a children's story to Madonna. At first other obligations took the singer away from the idea, but after giving birth to her son Rocco, Madonna would begin to work on her first children's book; "The English Roses". A moral tale, it would release in 100 countries translated into 42 languages, being one of the first books to ever do so simultaneously. "The English Roses" would debut at the top of the New York Times Bestseller list, finishing at the fifth place for overall releases in 2003. While reviews were mixed, it's overall success and positive public reception would encourage Madonna to write more children's books including 2 more picture books and a chapter book series which used the same characters from the first book. It would also result in Madonna writing "Mr. Peabody's Apples", "Yakov and the Seven Thieves", "The Adventures of Abdi", and "Lotsa de Casha", themselves also well-received if less commercially successful.
