Description: FIRST EDITION SIGNED ~ THE HUNGER and Other Stories ~ by Charles Beaumont, G.P. Putnam, 1957 Jacques Aubuchon’s copy. Charles Beaumont’s First Book, a collection of seventeen stories, is exceedingly uncommon signed, this copy also has a unique connection to The Twilight Zone! Charles Beaumont wrote several Original Twilight Zone episodes; including ‘Long Live Walter Jameson’, ‘The Howling Man’, ‘Printer’s Devil’ and ‘Valley of the Shadow’. This copy is signed by Beaumont on the front endpaper in turquoise ink. A superb collection of the author’s early work, eight of the seventeen stories are published here for the first time. Actor, Jacques Aubuchon (1924-1992), appeared in The Twilight Zone episode The Valley of the Shadow, (season 4, episode 3, 1/17/63), which was scripted by Charles Beaumont (see photos 3,4,& 5). The actor noted his last name in pencil on the second (blank) page of the book. With some research over the years I was able to obtain a photo example of Jacques Aubuchon's printed handwriting (photo 4). I acquired this copy nearly twenty five years ago from a California dealer, who had acquired it from a friend (or family member) of the actor. (Please note: photos 4 & 5 are for reference only, this material is not included with the book). Thanks to Marc Scott Zicree's The Twilight Zone Companion for the info in photo 5. The book: A Very Good to Very Good+ copy of the book, with all corners sharp and the spine lettering brilliant and bright. There is rubbing to the boards, primarily along the bottom edge, with some minor rubbing to tips and the head of the upper spine. The interior front and rear endpapers are clean, the text block showing some darkening along extreme edges of the pages. Otherwise the pages remain creamy, supple and firmly bound. The dust jacket: A Very Good to Very Good+ original dust jacket, with original price intact. The jacket is complete with only minor loss at corner tips, rubbing to upper and lower spine and a very thin line of rubbing to the rear panel. The inner flaps show foxing, primarily to the upper edges. The front flap has two diagonal creases, one roughly three and half inches and one shorter, one inch, closer to the edge of the front flap. There is foxing to the verso of the jacket, heavier along the upper edges and folds. There is some bleed through to the outer jacket - though back in its mylar protector, it is much less apparent. Overall this jacket 'presents' better when viewed in person. It has none of the usual fading to the light-sensitive purple/turquoise spine. Charles Beaumont (1929-1967), wrote 22 episodes of The Twilight Zone, several movie scripts including the camp classic Queen of Outer Space. For Roger Corman, Beaumont scripted three of his 'Poe' films, The Premature Burial, Masques of the Red Death and The Haunted Palace. This in addition to scores of short stories! He died in 1967 at the age of 38 from what would, years later, be diagnosed as early-stage Alzheimer's. All hardcover books with jackets include a mylar protector.
