Singer Featherweight 221-1 Sewing Machine, Case, Attachments, Centennial ca.1951

Description: A beautiful 1951 “A Century of Sewing Service 1851-1951” Singer Featherweight 221 (FW 221-1) centennial badged sewing machine with case, foot controller, attachments and extra bobbins offered by Snowdrift Antiques. Singer Featherweights were first produced in October of 1933. They made their public debut at the 1934 Chicago World’s Fair. They celebrated numerous milestones over the years with specific badges on the machines including their centennial version in 1951 badged A Century of Sewing Service 1851-1951. Production of the black Singer Featherweights ended in 1961 but Singer continued production of tan and pale turquoise (aka celery green or white) Featherweights through 1969. This is an excellent condition Singer Featherweight sewing machine, Model 221-1. Its serial number is AK590701 which indicates it was manufactured on or about October 31, 1951 in Elizabethport, New Jersey. Singer featherweights are highly desirable and this one has tons going for it beyond being a centennial version! The machine itself is a beauty. It has its original paint which is shiny and clean. There are age-appropriate light scratches on the sewing surface and on the arm to the left of the light; see images 12 and 13. The graphics are strong and bright with very minor scuffing. There are nicks to the black paint on the bobbin winder arm and flywheel; see image 14. It has its original Singer Manufacturing Company gold badge; as mentioned above this one has the highly desirable centennial badge which reads “A Century of Sewing Service 1851-1951”. The light works and the machine runs beautifully. It was recently oiled and lightly greased and is ready to take on new sewing projects. It has the solid base mold under the electrical terminal; not the split base mold of the earlier Featherweights. It has the striated faceplate. The motor has the number 678-3A on it. The machine has its original presser foot (marked Simanco USA 45321) and bobbin case (marked Simanco USA 45750). The 1951 Singer featherweights had the solid black Bakelite foot. There is good action to this foot controller/pedal but the cord was in poor shape with nicks down to the wire so it was replaced with a new one that fits the Singer Featherweight. I always recommend following good sewing machine practice and unplugging the machine when not in use; these old beauties don’t have on/off switches for safety like we do today. This machine comes in a Singer featherweight Type VI case with the black Bakelite handle. The black interior is in very good vintage condition. There are very few minor scuffs on the outside and a rub to one of the front corners; see image 17. There is no funky or moldy odor to the case. The latches work beautifully with good spring. There is an original key! The key works by turning the right-hand lock a full 360 degrees counterclockwise to lock the latch and clockwise to unlock it. The left-hand lock works by turning the key a full 360 degrees clockwise to lock the latch and counterclockwise to unlock it. Included in the case is a wide array of goodies. • original green cover instruction book Form 18740 (Rev 0750) – revised July 1950; it is in good vintage condition, all the pages are present; the front cover has a crease and slight tear on the upper right corner and there is a name written in pencil on the first page; see image 1. • 4 bobbins in the case tray and 1 bobbin in the machine • 2 original Singer needle packets, one with 2 size 16 needles and the other with 3 size 18 needles (there is also a needle in the machine and these can still be bought today) • an original Singer screw driver set which includes the larger loop screwdriver (Simanco USA 25537) and a small screwdriver (120378) and an original lint brush • a 1951 Singer Buttonholer attachment in green plastic box with all pieces included • a boxed set of 4 additional Singer Buttonholer templates: 3/8”, 1/2”, 5/8” keyhole, and 15/16” • an original metal Singer oil can and a tube of Singer motor lubricant in original box And a very useful green Singer cardboard box of attachments, most of which are shown and described in the instruction book… • Foot Hemmer, Simanco USA 120855 • Adjustable Hemmer, Simanco USA 35931 • Bias Binder with Pins, Singer USA 160847 • Edge Stitcher, Singer USA 36865 • Gatherer, Simanco USA 121441 • Ruffler, Singer USA • Extra attachments: Tucker (unmarked), Narrow Hinged Zipper Foot (Singer Gr Britain 161127), Seam/Cloth guide with screw (Singer USA 25527) and a Bias Fabric Cutting Guide (fits onto scissors to help cut straight lines) I, Jeff’s wife, have sewn on my Singer Featherweight since 1977 and sold many over the past 8 years and this is yet another lovely early one that I have the honor of finding a new home for. This highly collectable centennial Singer Featherweight is a well taken care of beauty with lots of desirable features for the collector or sewing enthusiast.
