Cohen The 17th Cavalry Battalion [also called the 6th]. It contained four companies and was attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. After serving along the coast near Charleston, the unit merged into the 5th South Carolina Cavalry Regiment, which was organized in January 1863, consolidating the 14th and the 17th Battalions. In March 1864, the regiment moved to Virginia and was assigned to Butler’s Brigade, which fought in The Wilderness Campaign, the Battles of Cold Harbor, South of the James River. It was later active in the campaign of the Carolinas and attached to Logan’s Brigade. The 5th surrendered to the Army of Tennessee. Research on Cohen included. Toning.
