After serving four and a half years in the Royal Tank Regiment, he studied painting at The Regent Street Polytechnic Art School, then spent one year at London University. He taught art part-time while developing a freelance career in graphics, and became a regular contributor to the famous British satirical magazine Punch. In 1957 he joined the editorial staff of Punch, and three years later was made Art Editor of the magazine.
