Description: SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR. Brass door knob, measuring 1.75 by 1.25 inches, taken from the Spanish Infanta Maria Teresa-class armored cruiser Almirante Oquendo while it was sinking following the American victory at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. BRASS DOOR KNOB TAKEN FROM THE SPANISH ARMORED CRUISER ALMIRANTE OQUENDO AND ACCOMPANIED WITH PROVENANCE HANDWRITTEN AND SIGNED BY MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT RICHMOND P. HOBSON Attached to an exhibition label with late 19th century provenance handwritten and signed by Richmond P. Hobson (1870-1937): “Relic of Infanta Maria Teresa Sunk in Battle of Santiago 1898, Raised by Lieut. [Richmond P.] Hobson & sunk in gale on 1st Nov. in Crooked Island passage off San Salvador.” Hobson was the only Navy officer to receive the Medal of Honor during the Spanish-American War for sinking his own ship, the collier Merrimac, in an attempt to block a channel from the Spanish during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba. He later served as a U.S. congressman for the 6th district of the state of Alabama from 1907 to 1915.
