Combined shipping may save on postage costs. Questions before bidding are always welcomed. This auction is for a unique, handcrafted, vintage 1983 serving bowl. This is an early Terrafirma piece with hand-sculpted, natural-clay decorations (grape leaf and vine rims, handles and base) that contrast beautifully with the glossy dark teal center. Designer, Ellen Evans, started her Terrafirma Ceramics Studio in NYC in 1980. In production for over 40 years, her work has developed in popularity and continues to evolve. Her initial goal was, and still is, to design handmade tableware that makes an elegant statement and enriches food presentation, while at the same time being durable enough for everyday use. Her studio's hallmark designs juxtaposes vibrant glossy colors and patterns against simple, warm-toned and sculpted natural-clay. Each piece is food safe and dishwasher safe; can be used in the oven if starting from room temperature in a cold oven; and is also microwave safe when used for warming, no more than 2 minutes. Source: Online researchVintage 1983Origin, New York City, NY, USAThe main section of the bowl is porcelain with a high-gloss dark-teal green glaze. The rim, handles, and bottom of the bowl are a natural, stained clay, unglazed, and hand sculpted to resemble grape leaves and vines. The underside is incised overall to harmonize with the grape vine texture.Signed/incised on the bottom is, "BE Terrafirma c 83."The colors are richer and warmer than photos can show and are more on the red side. Any yellow tint or white spots are from the camera.Handle to handle measures 9 1/2" wide and each handle stands about 3 1/4" highThe center section of the bowl holds 32 ounces and is about 8" in diameter and stands about 2 1/2" high. Weighs 2 pound, 3 ounces before packagingVery good pre-owned used vintage condition. There are no obvious chips or cracks. Upon close inspection, there are some minor utensil marks and some faint crazing on parts of the glossy center. The unglazed bottom has the original felt pads with some missing. Any flea bites, glaze misses, or other irregularities would be from the handcrafted process. The sculpted areas appear fragile but are quite durable; there are some rough edges that are part of the handmade process, and not damage of any kind, that we can tell. Item has been lightly wiped off for photos. Any more thorough cleaning or polishing will be left to the winner.Condition: See specifics above.
