Description: The B-26 DVD " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> The B-26 Marauder DVD Video Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. The Martin B-26 Marauder is an American World War II twin-engined medium bomber built by the Glenn L. Martin Company in Middle River, Maryland (just east of Baltimore) from 1941 to 1945. First used in the Pacific Theater in early 1942, it was also used in the Mediterranean Theater and in Western Europe. After entering service with the United States Army aviation units, the aircraft received the reputation of a "Widowmaker" due to the early models' high accident rate during takeoffs and landings. The Marauder had to be flown at exact airspeeds, particularly on final runway approach and when one engine was out. The 150 mph (241 km/h) speed on short final runway approach was intimidating to pilots who were used to much slower speeds, and whenever they slowed down to speeds below what the manual stated, the aircraft would stall and crash. The B-26 became a safer aircraft once crews were re-trained, and after aerodynamics modifications (an increase of wingspan and wing angle-of-incidence to give better takeoff performance, and a larger vertical stabilizer and rudder) The DVD contains five movies: - How To Fly The B-26 Airplane The Martin B-26 bomber was popularly known as the Marauder. This wartime training film shows how to handle the versatile craft, with Hollywood actor Don Porter playing the part of the pilot. (43 min) - Bomber (1941) Shows details in the manufacture of B-26 medium bombers at the Glenn L. Martin Company plant in Baltimore, Maryland. A commentary written by Carl Sandburg emphasizes the strength and usefulness of the plane. Includes scenes of bombers in England taking off to attack Germany. (9 min) - Combat Bombing: BOMBARDIER INDOCTRINATION TRAINING Army Air Forces Combat Report newsreel, excerpts from combat film report titled “It Can Be Done,” promotes America’s “get it done” attitude during in-the-field improvisations during World War II. (9 mins) - TARGET — GERMANY! While the British bombed at night, the American Eighth Air Force struck during the day. As seen in this film, they were exposed to German fighters and heavy flak. The Mighty Eighth endured huge losses before victory was secured. The fight is chronicled in "Target Germany!", a U.S. Army Air Force propaganda film, which features B-17s, B-24 Liberators and their P-47 Thunderbolt, P-51 Mustang and P-38 Lightning escorts. (37 min) - ARMY AIR FORCES COMBAT REPORT (newsreel) Misc. footage of the Army Engineers in Saipan, showing working conditions, the locals, destroyed Japanese hangers and aircraft, plus some P-61 fighter footage.
