Description: First edition, first impression by Alan Aldridge and William Plomer. This classic 1973 picture book was based on William Roscoe's early 19th-century poem, in a modernized version with verse by William Plomer, and magnificent illustrations by Alan Aldridge, an illustrator for the Beatles. An early advertisement issued by the publishers claimed that the illustrations were "some of the most beautiful ever to be seen in a children's book". A review in the Times Literary Supplement stated that they portrayed "a world of bizarre fantasy hovering somewhere between nightmare and the horror comic". The book led to an animated short film (released in 1974), and a concept album and, later, rock opera by Roger Glover which appeared in 1974 and 1975 respectively. Original pictorial boards, green endpapers. No dust jacket issued. Title page vignette and 28 colour plates by Aldridge. Inscribed on inner first cover by previous owner, very hard to see. Minor tears to top and foot of spine a near fine copy
