Rev. Davis collected the materials in this journal with two intentions – to honor the fallen Confederate comrades with a history of the ‘stirring events’ of the campaign, and to preserve the ‘correct account’ of all the trials of the war. The 4th Texas Infantry Regiment was created in 1861 to serve the Confederacy and it fought in Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia. As part of the famed Texas Brigade, the regiment fought throughout the war including at the battles of Eltham’s Landing, Seven Pines, Gaines’s Mill, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Waluhatchie, the Willderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and Appomattox.
