Description: PREFACE by The Cleveland Herald newspaper 1881: "The Receipts in this book are collected from several sources, and we feel it but right to mention some of thesethat we may not be accused of plagiarism." Marion Harland's two books "Breakfast, Luncheon and Tea." and "Common Sense in the Household" have furnished many of the best receipts; Others have been gathered from Mrs. Whitney's "Just How." and the "Home Cook Book," compiled by Toledo Ladies. As will be seen there are good many of Miss Dods'; These dishes were prepared by Miss Dods at her lectures on cooking, delivered in Cleveland in the Spring of 1879. Miss Dods is a graduate of an English Cooking School. her lectures in Cleveland were attended by many ladies, all of whom were much delighted with the delicious dishes which her deft fingers brought forth, while she, meantime, described her method, and gave many little suggestions valuable to housekeepers and cooks. A large number of the receipts have been taken from slips of paper, and fly leaves of the cook books of several ladies, and we all know why receipts are treasured on slips of paper and fly-leaves, and that all such are first rate. Nearly everything has been tried and will be found perfectly reliable. On account of the nature of our book, and its beling necessarily somewhat small, we have not cumbered it with common methods of cooking vegetables, and many other A,B,Cs of the culitary art which people rarely go to cook books to learn. " End of Preface ! "Across the state, middle class homemakers shaped numerous new and expanded charitable and professional associations, promoted mothers' pensions, and expanded forms of social welfare" (Ciani). From this context emerged projects like The Herald Cook Book -- funded by the local newspaper, it gave women an opportunity to share their knowledge as wives, mothers, and homemakers, and it assisted unmarried women in making new contacts and expanding their skillsets in writing, publishing, and project management. The Herald Cook Book 1881 is a vintage paperback with a softcover. It was published by The Herald Publishing CO, Cleveland in Cleveland, USA, and is a collector's and limited edition.
