Thomas Carlyle has his hands folded and his knees crossed. This is a vintage, original, 1885 Print from an old set of antique art prints which were sold in the USA in the 1880's. The set was entitled "Selections of Modern Art". The set was published in 1885 by D. Appleton & Co., Bond Street, New York. The set consists of "a choice selection of engravings and etchings...representing the work of some of the best-known painters and sculptors of recent years." It is dated 1885 on the front title Page. Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, 1st Baronet, RA (1834 -- 1890) was an Austrian-born British medallist and sculptor. In 1882, Boehm created this Carlyle statue, which is located in Chelsea Embankment Gardens, London, UK. This steel engraving was made by E. Roffe. Actual artwork surface is 7.5 inches by 4 inches, on a piece of thick, white, museum-quality, board paper that is 15 inches by 11 inches (Imperial Quarto). This sharp print was produced in 1885. Below the 7.5" x 4" artwork, there is the title, the engraver, the name of the artist, and the publishing company. The back side of the page is blank white. There is a small stain 1.5 inches to the left of Carlyle's knee, The white margins of the 15x11 paper have light foxing and edgewear.
