Description: A Very Unusual Tibetan Thangka plaque painted on buffalo horn depicting the Tantric Buddhist deity Samantabhadra with his female aspect in father- mother union or “Yab-Yum”. The Bodhisattva Samantabhadra is the embodiment of benevolence. He is shown in union with his own female aspect. This represents the union of wisdom (female) with compassion (male).Samantabhadra’s hands are in the dhyana mudra, or the hand gesture of meditation. Two Bodhisattvas are depicted at the top of the plaque bestowing blessings. In the center top is the Buddha Amitabha. He is the Buddha of infinite light. Beneath Samantabhadra is probably a Dharmapala, a fierce deity that protects the Buddha’s teachings or Buddha Dharma. His hands are in the Dharmachakra, or turning the wheel of the Dharma mudra. Likewise this Dharmapala has Bodhisattvas on either side. The work is in excellent condition. - please see my other horn painting The painting measures 5 1/2” X 3 1/2”. The last photos listed are illustrations of the deities as shown & described in: Rhie, Marylin M. & Robert A. F. Thurman. “ Wisdom and Compassion : The Sacred Art of Tibet.” Expanded edition. Tibet House & Harry N. Abram’s, 1991, 1996. pp. 198 & 430.
