Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE This vintage 1920’s iridescent candy jar with a lid topped with a finial is made of marigold colored “carnival glass” by either Jeannette Glass Company or the Imperial Glass Company. Neither company “marked” all of their products at the time this was made. As many of the U.S. glass companies copied each other in the 20’s and 30’s, my dating comes from this Finlandia Tree Bark pattern being introduced by Jeannette and shown in the 1927 Butler Brothers catalog. I have also seen this pattern attributed to Imperial. Interestingly, both companies were located fairly close to the large Finntown thriving in Monessen, Pennsylvania and Jean Sibelius’ symphonic, “Finlandia,” was first performed in 1900 in Helsinki. It helped Finland’s nationalistic movement to declare its independence from Russia in 1917. The pattern resembles the tree bark of Finland’s native birch trees. Could Finnish workers have suggested this pattern? The ”goblet” stands 5.75 in high with a 3.5 in diameter rim-top and base. The lid also measures 3.5 in to the top of the finial for a total overall height of 9.25 inches. The complete item weighs just under 21 oz and can hold 12 fluid oz to the top of the pattern, leaving 0.625 in of open rim space. A very close inspection in front of a direct light source will reveal a few tiny bubbles, along with some slashes, but these are all manufacturing imperfections, original to the product. An excellent addition to your carnival glass collection. It is beautiful in all lighting, reflecting many different colors from pink, to orange, to yellow. This apothecary-shaped candy jar is a bit of a rare find with a lid!
