Description: Just one of inkFrog's Creations Description: Vintage English Silver Nuvo Enamel Opening Punch and Judy Caravan Circus Charm This wonderful, hard-to-find vintage opening caravan charm was made by the English charm maker Nuvo. The charm is modeled after a popular English traveling puppet show featuring Punch, the cantankerous and often violent creature who likes to bash people in the head with his stick, and another character -- in this case, it’s Judy, his poor wife who’s taking a beating. It makes for lively entertainment at English fairs. The puppeteer would hold a reed-like device called a swizzle or swatchel, in his mouth to make his voice squawk, as Punch would gleefully declare after clobbering Judy, “That’s the way to do it!” The puppet show can be traced to the 16th century Italian Commedia Dell’arte (comedy of artists). Punch’s character derives from Pulcinella, or Punchinello, a stock character from Naples, Italy.The charm is a beautiful work of art, with a cut-away window to view the show. Inside, the characters are enameled red and yellow, with some slight enamel loss. The charm measures 3/4" wide and tall. The inside is stamped “Nuvo.” It is made of .925 sterling silver, and weighs 6.7 grams. The condition is very good with a secure closure. Perfect for a circus or carnival theme charm bracelet!
