In addition to pottery, they are also widely used for a plethora of other traditional Japanese crafts including kimono accessories, wrapping cloths, chopsticks, commemorative gifts, etc, and even food. This is a vintage Japanese open wooden box made to hold a set of ceramic or porcelain plates/dishes. There are two compartments of the same size and there are black kanji characters written on both sides. This box may have been used multiple times for different items. The lid is missing, however, the box is made from strong wood and is excellent for general storage, DIY, or decoration.
