Description: Welcome to my site! Up for auction / sale BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE MOLA FROM THE KUNA (CUNA) INDIAN CULTURE - PANAMA - BOXER ROBERTO DURANDimensions are 16 1/4” x 13" Unframed Mola of Roberto Durán Samaniego (born June 16, 1951) is a Panamanian former professional boxer who competed from 1968 to 2001. He held world championships in four weight classes: Lightweight, welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight. Duran also reigned as the undisputed and lineal lightweight champion and the lineal welterweight champion.Durán was known as a versatile, technical brawler and pressure fighter, which earned him the nickname "Manos de Piedra" ("Hands of Stone") for his formidable punching power and excellent defense. This vintage piece is beautiful and has a different quality than the new ones. The stitching is nearly invisible on all cut outs with the addition of beautiful, running embroidery on fighters, the boxing gloves, shorts and shoes. The fabric is strong with minimal wear and no rips or tears. This Mola has been in storage wrapped in white acid-free archival tissue paper for its protection for decades. This Vintage beautiful Mola is piece of art work. Old molas signify that they have been used and worn, they can be torn, have holes, faded or stained. They are collectibles. "Molas are hand-made using a reverse appliqué technique. Several layers (usually two to seven) of different-colored cloth (usually cotton) are sewn together; the design is then formed by cutting away parts of each layer. The edges of the layers are then turned under and sewn down.Molas have their origin in body painting like they are still used by many indigenous groups of Latin America. A main concept in Molas is to leave as little unworked space as possible as the Kuna (Cuna) believe that evil spirits can settle in the free spaces. Based on this, several repeating filling elements can be found in traditional Molas. The vertical slots imitate the sun beams shining through the bamboo walls of traditional Kuna homes. They also mean being protected by the family.Molas are much more than decorative textiles; they are a window into the rich culture, history, and beliefs of the Kuna (Cuna) people. Each mola tells a unique story, and understanding the symbolism behind it can deepen our appreciation for this beautiful art form. A rack - #4 Thank you for your business!
