Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE GJPaw Auctions is pleased to offer a wonderful pair of vintage tribal Ear Weights, from the Dayak People, Kalimantan, Indonesia. Body modifications are one of the many great cultural practices and traits of peoples all over the world. From Africa to the Americas, ancient tribes and civilizations have used body modifications to enhance their beauty as well as display status and as a symbol of power. Ear stretching is one such body modification. Stretching is the means by which one slowly enlarges a body piercing to accommodate increasingly larger sizes of jewelry. Throughout history, many cultures have practiced earlobe stretching as a sign of beauty and status. Masks and statues of the boy king Tutankhamen show his earlobes spaced, and the Moai statutes on Easter Island - or Rapa Nui by its traditional name - which were carved around 1100 A.D., also display long ears with stretched lobes. Long earlobes as a sign of beauty are a feature of the Dayak people. Dayak is the “loose” given name for the indigenous tribal peoples of Borneo, which encompasses the Malayan states of Sarawak and Sabah and the Indonesian territory of Kalimantan. Large, heavy, globular or pear-shaped earrings (sometimes called “spinning top”) tapering to a point at the bottom worn on extended earlobes were often used as a sign of maturity or marriageable status for Dayak women. Brasswork is also highly prized by the inland Dayaks. This quite beautiful pair of earrings measures 1.25 inches in diameter by 3.25 inches in height (3.81 cm by 8.25 cm), not including the specially designed, hand-made, iron museum display stand. They are in very good condition, and show wear consistent with a dating to the mid-20th century. They are guaranteed authentic and would make a superb addition to any collection of S.E.
