E.g. a piece can be solid gold but have a hollow core design. There is a margin of error to consider regarding gold content. Hallmark gold content stamps are not always 100% accurate (e.g. a 9ct gold ring stamped 375, may in fact be 36% gold instead of 37.5%). Furthermore, just because a piece does not have hallmarks, does not mean its not gold.
