Description: Voladores By Nicolás de Jesús, Mexico Aquatint on amate paper 25" high x 15.5" wide (paper size) 19” high x 9.5” wide (plate size)Edition 83 of 150Free International and Domestic ShippingThe September 11th attack struck at the core of America's three great symbols: the Twin Towers (economic power), the Pentagon (military power), and the White House (political power). The profound symbolism of this tragedy necessitated a symbolic representation, leading to the creation of works like Los Voladores. This engraving was published in 2002 in Geo magazine, alongside a piece by Francisco Toledo, one of the most renowned contemporary Mexican painters. It's clear that the enormity of the September 11 tragedy, with its evident sacrificial undertones, captured the artist's attention. De Jesús employs the sacred tree trunk, integral to the ancient voladores (or flying men) ritual. In this remarkable engraving, Bin Laden assumes the role of the voladores' captain. Perched atop the mast and encircled by planes, he plays his flute, directing the many skeletons and American symbols spinning below him. These symbols, representing power, include the Dow Jones, Uncle Sam, the Church, bombs, oil, and even the pope’s head dangling from the voladores rope. At the base of the mast, a frenzied crowd appears, leaving us uncertain whether they are gripped by fear or reveling in delight. The recurring theme in traditional Amayaltepec amate art is everyday village life, with its celebrations and beliefs. After moving to Chicago in the 1980s, de Jesús began depicting urban life in the U.S. in a similar style. His art reveals a deep political awareness, addressing issues such as transgenic agriculture, repression, migration, and war. He cites Mexican engraver José Guadalupe Posada as a significant influence for his satirical work and social engagement. De Jesús’ work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows, including the South Bend Museum of Art (IN), Neuberger Museum of Art (NY), and Arlington Art Center (VA).ShippingWorks of art such as this require expert care during transportation to the buyer’s location.
