Description: Six Vintage Paperbacks by William Faulkner, all from the same owner's collection--Robert C. Gowdy, from his years at the McCallie School in Chattanooga to LSU to Harvard. An interesting dive through an owner's collection of 1950s and 1960s vintage William Faulkner novels. Perfect patina and look for a collector! The set consists of these books: 1. Soldier's Pay, Signet Books, October 1961. Age toning and small scuffs to spine edge and lower front. A lovely, lurid vintage cover advertising "Sex and Death" on the back. Signed "R. Gowdy, McCallie School, Spring 1962" on inside front page, with a small owner's sticker opposite. Beautiful early '60s vibe. 2. Mosquitoes, Dell. May 1962. Very good condition, yellow cover with swirling author and titles in black and brown. Advertising Faulkner as the Nobel Prize Winner, the book is billed as "His Famous Novel of Live and Love in the World of Art" and on the back as "a brilliant satiric picture of life in the Jazz Age." Signed "R. Gowdy, McCallie School, Spring 1962" on inside front page, with a small owner's sticker opposite. 3. Pylon, Now a Great Motion Picture The Tarnished Angels, Signet Books, March 1958 printing. Age toning and small scuffs to the top of spine at front cover edge, extremely good condition for a 65-year-old paperback. A movie tie in, the book features a turquoise, navy, red and white cover, again using the 1950's version of sexual marketing with a woman's dress blown up as she parachutes down. Owner's name in in ink "Gowdy, L.S.U, Spring 1964" on inside front page with small rectangular ownership sticker opposite. Has an 8 in pencil on the book front, which I did not try to remove so as not to disturb the patina. According to viaLibri.net, this is the most valuable book of the set, priced at $35.00. 4. Knight's Gambit, Signet, June 1956. First two pages are loose, small chipping at top of spine. Advertised as "TALES OF CRIME, GUILT, AND LOVE" by our "Greatest Living Writer," the cover features images of kissing and gunplay. Small scratch across back cover. Owner's name in in ink "Gowdy, L.S.U, Spring 1964" on inside front page with small rectangular ownership sticker opposite. 5. The Unvanquished, Signet Classic, August 1962. Very good condition, small rubs to front spine edge. Cover is not quite as lurid as the previously listed books, with a portrait on the front and flames in the background. Some underlining and a few handwritten textual notes. Previous owner's small sticker on inside cover. 6. The Hamlet, Modern Library Paperback, stated publication date of 1940. Back cover lists to #29 of the Modern Library Paperbacks, The Kreutzer Sonata. Starkly red cover with white windmill and log homes. Very good condition, small scuffs at top right front corner and bottom lower left corner. Listed on viaLibri.net at $20.00. Owner's name in ink "Robert Gowdy Grays 15-16, Harvard, Cambridge, Mass." with a small rectangular owner's sticker opposite. Overall, an intriguing collection of books, perfect for Faulkner collectors, ephemera collectors, vintage paperback collectors, or anyone interested in one the most interesting writers in American, Southern, and Mississippi literature.
