WW1 US Navy 1918 US Navy small vessels along larger ship in Scotland Photo

Description: This is an extremely rare, and perhaps one-of-a-kind image World War One U.S. Navy image. This is a photo brought back from WWI by a US Navy sailor named Joseph Mondzelski of Parson, PA who appears to have served aboard destroyer tender USS Black Hawk and/or USS Lake, largely in Scotland (Kirkwall/Orkney islands). He also took photos of USS Lakeview, a transport ship that operated near Scotland too, and appears to have been familiar with that crew. Type & Size: A 4x2.5 original photograph. Condition: The back side of most photos in this lot have remnants from being glued in a scrapbook. Please see photos for condition. This photograph from 1918 captures multiple small naval vessels moored alongside a larger ship, likely a tender or supply vessel, in a harbor setting. The image is taken from an elevated angle, showcasing the boats' structures and some personnel aboard. The scene reflects maritime activity during World War I, particularly in the operational area around Scotland, as Joseph Mondzelski, the presumed owner of the photograph, served in that region. In 1918, the U.S. Navy was heavily engaged in support operations across the Atlantic, particularly in European waters where naval supply and logistics were crucial. The history of the time showcases naval strategy focusing on convoy protection, anti-submarine warfare, and support to stationed troops. Notable ships, such as the USS Lake and USS Black Hawk, played key roles in these operations, often operating alongside smaller crafts like those depicted in this photograph. The visual documentation from sailors like Mondzelski provides valuable insight into the naval operations of the era. There is no visible text or identifying markers in the image itself, and no names of notable individuals present in the photograph.
